The Art of Letting Go

The deepest surrender is remembering that love has never required control.” Sage

Dear Ones,

Many spiritual masters teach the art of letting go and surrender. These words often have negative connotations for many people. They are often misunderstood as giving up something precious, something we really want to hold on to. But when we look closer, what we are invited to let go of are our attachments and aversions.

Attachments are our persistent efforts to hold onto something for dear life. We believe we need this, we really want this. But holding onto anything so tightly, trying to control it and manipulate it, actually reveals that we are coming from fear. We are like an anxious child holding her mother’s hand very, very tightly.

In aversions we are doing the opposite. We are pushing against something so that it doesn’t enter our world. We are in a defensive mode, saying no to something, or suppressing the thought of it as soon as it enters our mind. Again we are governed by fear.

Acting from fear always creates more fear. When we are too attached and clinging, we can’t hear our intuition, and so we can’t actually see clearly if what we cling to so much is actually for our highest good or is just cluttering our everyday life experience and preventing something far better from entering our lives. Also, fear is disconnective energy, so we are actually more likely to lose that which we cling to.

When we push against something and become defensive, we in fact call it closer to us, as what we resist persists. By trying to get rid of it, we actually give it much attention and, by the powerful law of attraction, we call it closer and closer to us.

And so it becomes apparent to us that by holding on to both attachments and aversions, we don’t do ourselves a favour. In both cases we temporarily lose sight of who we truly are—a powerful eternal being of light and love, always connected to Source, to everyone and everything in this beautiful web of unconditional love. With attachments and aversions we believe instead in lack, limitation and separation. In a way, this forgetfulness, and consequently fear, is a part of a human story we all signed up for—to forget who we are, to then remember who we are from a new point of view. So there is no need to judge ourselves when we notice ourselves being caught in fear, attachments and aversions.

But if we don’t want to settle for anything less than a truly fulfilling life based on love, joy and freedom, we will let them go. When we do so, we release ourselves from the bondage and limitation of fearful living. We let go of push and pull and flow with life freely. We allow ourselves to dance with life. In total freedom we can hear the rhythm of life accurately, and our moves become synchronised with all our dancing partners. We know when to say yes and when to say no. When to sit down and rest, when to dance slower and when to dance faster. So that when we finally leave the dance floor, it will be with deep knowing that we had a wonderful time and also brought joy to those around us.

And so, dearest One, if you feel inspired to practise the art of letting go, join us for this week’s meditation.

I look forward to meditating with you.

Lots of love,
Jana
